While
like Houigaku, Satsujin Sousa this
book is also directed toward the layman, it is not quite as light or entertaining
a read. Dr. Misawa wrote this book while staring impending retirement squarely
in the face. His professional reputation among his peers is well established,
and it looks to me like one of his primary aims in writing this book was to
attempt to impress the public and create a legacy for himself in the popular
perception. He spent too much time tooting his own horn, in other words.
There was one small section in Houigaku,
Satsujin Sousa which gave me the impression that Dr. Misawa might harbor
a certain xenophobic or jingoistic streak. There was one large section in this
book which removed all doubt. This man apparently has no use for foreigners
in his Japan and would probably appreciate it if we would all go back where
we came from.
