This
book takes up where Keimusho no Okite left
off. The author's stated purpose is to provide a more in depth look at the entire
process leading up to finalization of a criminal sentence, mostly in response
to people who were facing going through the criminal justice system or from
family members who were anxious over what would become of their loved ones.
While the book therefore provides a valuable service to its Japanese readers,
it also provides a good bug's eye view of the process for foreign readers. Read
this one and I can almost guarantee you'll be more informed about the subject
than 95% of your Japanese acquaintances. Azuchi includes first-hand experiences
with the system as well as stories from those he has counselled, all put into
perspective by brief introductions to and explanations of relevant sections
of the Japanese criminal code.
