Kikanakatta Basho

"Kikanakatta Basho" is the first serious novel I read in Japanese, though not the first book. While Matsumoto's plots can become quite involved, his writing style is very straightforward. One of my Japanese friends referred to him as a "man of few adjectives." This makes his books somewhat more friendly to the non-native reader...or to readers who don't like writers who pad their manuscripts.
