What are
all these taxis doing with their trunk lids raised? Fuelling up before
starting their work day.
Almost all taxis in Tokyo run on LPG instead of gasoline, and they have
the tanks in their trunks. This severely limits the amount of passenger
baggage they can carry. If you're headed to the airport and need lots
of room, call a cab company and ask them to send a wagon taxi for you.
Recently, due to heavy pressure from Tokyo's Governor, more and more service
vehicles in Tokyo are switching from diesel to cleaner burning LPG. Stiff
new punitive taxes face those who can't or won't make the change.
